Why I do what I do | Mitchell, SD Photographer

Jan 17, 2019

If you would have ever asked me…

if I was a creative person, I would have laughed at you.  I loved math class in high school.  I double-majored in business management and information technology management in college, and my only goal in life was to find a successful desk job working 8+ hours a day. And I got there. I achieved that goal and I was satisfied. But I was still yearning for something more.

I never planned on being a photographer.

I didn’t pick up my camera to do something easier.  I picked up my camera to do something I love.  To do something that I could get lost in.  I realized after the loss of my dad, that life is simply too short to not love what you’re doing every single day. My goal now? To find joy and gratitude in my every day life.

My photography journey…

began in the hunting fields. My entire family is a hunting family. We’ve had pheasant hunters coming to our farm every opening weekend of pheasant season for as long as I can remember. Dad always told me that if I shot pheasants, I had to clean them…and I had no interest in doing that. So I took my camera to the field instead of a gun. I walked the fields and photographed the pheasants in flight and the hunters doing what they did. And it was the gentle nudging from our pheasant hunters and the joy my dad got from my hunting photos, that prompted me to do something more with it.

So…why do I do what I do?

Because I believe in the timeless power a photograph can have. As we race through this life…we need something that we can stop and look back at. To relive those precious moments with our children. To remember our loved ones. To pass on our family history. I am so honored that I can provide images to families and couples that they will cherish forever. I love that I can take photos of my children so when they are children no more…I will have a record of who they were in each stage of their life. Photography is important…and I want to help you with that.
